US Space Force Makes Commercial the Default Setting

Aviation Week — The recently passed defense appropriations bill funded the U.S. Space Force’s commercial services budget line at nearly $169 million, compared with the Pentagon’s $36.6 million request. The amount marks a fourfold increase over 2025, says Sam Wilson, director for strategy and national security at Aerospace’s Center for Space Policy and Strategy.

US Space Development Agency Explores On-Demand Deorbiting

Aviation Week — The SDA awarded a contract to Tukwila, Washington-based startup Starfish Space to deorbit at least one of the agency’s satellites in a mission targeted for 2027. The goal is to validate a commercial “deorbit-as-a-service” model for managing end-of-life disposal in LEO.
